About Music

Music has always been a big part of my life, this is not just a cliche. It was the same in my family, music was always around us. Because of my roots, I grew up very close to Azerbaijani folk and classical music. Also, thanks to my father, I discovered jazz and blues during my childhood.

When I was growing up, Turkish rap music was rising quickly, and I was there to witness that change. Hip-hop culture was always somewhere in the background during my childhood, because I was naturally drawn to the protest side of rap music. It always spoke to something inside me.

In the early years of my teenage life, I started listening to grunge and rock through Pearl Jam and Nirvana and later discovered post-grunge and alternative bands such as Three Days Grace and Evanescence, mostly because of my group of friends and the video games we played together. I think it was also about the spirit of those years and my own rebellious side.

In high school, these genres slowly turned into heavier music and I found myself exploring the subgenres of heavy metal. Like many others, I started with thrash metal but that phase did not last very long. Soon after, I moved into folk and symphonic metal. For a long time, I listened to Turkish folk metal bands like Yaşru, European bands like Korpiklaani and Eluveitie and I was also a fan of Neue Deutsche Härte, especially Rammstein. That period helped me see music in a deeper way. Later on, I became more interested in experimental sounds. I started listening to progressive rock and metal through Tool and Gojira and these are still the genres I feel closest to today.

My university years were a complete chaos in terms of music. That was when I discovered experimental rock and post-rock through GY!BE and Wayfarer. Music without vocals or with deep monologues and heavy, emotional guitar riffs really affected me and the albums F♯ A♯ ∞ and World's Blood took over me.

At the same time, I started listening to Soviet-era post-punk and new wave music through Kino and Viktor Tsoi. I guess it was like pouring benzin on a fire but somehow, that was exactly what I needed.

To sum it all up, I have listened to many different styles of music over the years and I still do. For me, it is not about the genre itself but about whether the music can touch my soul or not. Limiting yourself to only a few genres is like trying to see the world in black and white.

Do not be a poser 🤘🏻
